Tales, Sketches, & Poems of Charles Fenno Hoffman

Coming this summer…

“Of all the gifted group who constituted the literati of twenty years agone, no one was more universally admired, respected and beloved than Mr. Hoffman.”

— Elizabeth Oakes Smith, 1867

Charles Fenno Hoffman (1806-1884) was a New York poet, writer, and editor whose works were widely embraced during the 19th century. However, his 1840 novel, Greyslaer: A Romance of the Mohawk, has been republished only a few times, and on occasion, lines from his 1835 travelogue, A Winter in the West, are quoted. Otherwise, Hoffman’s works do not receive the recognition they once did. This collection is the first of its kind to revive many of Hoffman’s short stories along with several examples of his finest poems, introducing this important peer of Edgar Allan Poe and James Fenimore Cooper to a new generation.
